Every industry in the United States is classified by a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the resource available for finding a SIC code. SIC codes are four digits long. The first two digits represent the industry division code and the subsequent two digits represent a specific product category within that division. SIC codes provide detail about the products and services in a specific industry; therefore, these codes are often used to study and analyze a variety of industries. Open a browser window and go to the NAICS website (see References). Click “Code Search.” Scroll down until you see the “SIC Drill-Down Menu.” Click on the “Div” range corresponding to the industry title you are interested in.
