In the last decade there has been a lot of growth in new disciplines like inline figure skating, that were formerly just a cross-training option. Fortunately, many roller sports activities can be done on both inline and quad skates. And in the same way that some sports like speed are better suited to inline skates, other disciplines like roller derby work better with quad skates.
