How Do I Make A Wooden Bowl On My Lathe?
Wooden bowls can be both beautiful and utilitarian. It is also a project within the reach of the average handyman with a turning lathe and the proper chisels. The project is usually undertaken by woodworkers with a complete shop. Along with the lathe a band saw is also necessary. Prepare the wood bowl blank by cutting it to a shape as round as possible using a band saw. This process should also remove any bark or loose wood on the bowl blank. Mark the center of the bowl blank, as near as can be determined, on each side of the bowl. Mount the bowl in a chuck according to instructions from the chuck manufacturer. This chuck is then mounted on the headstock, or powered, side of the lathe. Bring the tailstock, with a live center mounted, up to the bowl blank and tighten in place. Run the lathe at a low speed while turning bowl around. It will vibrate to begin with until the bowl blank becomes round. Increase speed and shape the exterior profile of the bowl as desired.
