You can run chdsk within the windows environment. Start, run and type CMD in the black window. When it opens type CHKDSK. However, for the best results you should run it outside the windows environment. Restart the computer and when the bios flash screen appears press F8 repeatedly until you are taken to the windows start option screen. Select boot to command prompts and run the chkdsk utility.
