Wood stain is very liquid and is absorbed almost completely by the wood so you do not need to spray it, you will not leave brush marks. Just brush it on, dip the item or `sponge’ it on with a cloth pad (old T shirt). If however, you are going to use a stain coloured wood varnish then yes you can spray it just thin it down a bit first.
