The silver trumpet looks and sounds its best when it is cared for and kept clean. Basic cleaning should be performed daily, and in depth cleaning should be done once a month. This keeps the trumpet in shape and prevents the parts from sticking. A clean trumpet will play better, and the valves and slides will react with the precision you need. Following the proper cleaning procedure ensures you do not damage your trumpet in your attempts to care for it. Hold the trumpet facing the ground at a 45 degree angle. Unscrew the cap on top of the first valve and slide it halfway out. Apply four or five drops of valve oil onto the valve. Let the valve go so it falls back into place. Rotate the valve until you hear a soft click. Pull out the slides on the trumpet. Apply a coating of slide grease onto the part of the slide that goes into the trumpet.
