What were VW thinking when they brought out the VR6 Golf?

The clio 182 was introduced about 2002 – many years after the Golf VR6. At the time it was the most powerful car in its class. Remember that the GTi of the time had only 115bhp (although the 16v did have 150bhp), and the most powerful Clio of the time was the 137bhp Clio 16v (the Clio Williams came later) However, it wasn’t all about power. It was torquey and refined in a way a highly tuned naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four cylinder engine could never be. It could pull in 5th gear from only a few hundred rpm (below normal idle speed). It wasn’t aimed at the sort of person who would appreciate a Clio 182. It’s natural home was the Autobahn, while the Clio is more at home on a B-road.
