How do i get rid of blanket weed?
I pull mine out by hand and trailing it around sticks – this is easier in a smaller pond of course. I do use extract of barley straw and this does suppress it. Repeated treatments and regular removal of the weed is typically required for heavy infestations. Remove any rotting plant debris, as this will feed the blanket weed’s growth, as would plant fertiliser getting into the pond from your garden. Also, prevent autumn leaves getting into your pond. Pump filters will help clean the pond, especially where you’re adding biological treatments to process waste. The weed needs sunlight to grow, and so any covering material will limit this and restrain growth. My water lillies do a reasonable job, once they have fully established. I also use a floating hippo, and this does his/her best too, other obects will help as well. Warmer water is also a recipe for increased blanket weed growth, so it is being fuelled by our unseasonally high temperatures and sunny days. Beware general pond weedkillin
