Braided rugs have been a simple, affordable way to add color and comfort to homes for hundreds of years. They add warmth to floors without carpeting and provide an old-fashioned, down-to-earth appeal to any room. There are several methods used to make braided rugs, as well as different shapes in which the rugs can be created. One of the most uncomplicated ways is to make an oval-shaped braided rug that does not require a loom, any special tools or even a needle or thread. Draw an oval onto the carpet padding in the size that you want your rug to be. Cut the shape out of the padding using the scissors. Tear or cut the fabric into long, thin strips. Each strip must be about the same width; however, the length of the strips is not important. A good width for the strips is 3 to 4 inches wide.
