How Do You Care For A Sarracenia?
A sarracenia plant may be any of eight to 11 species of North American pitcher plants. All of these species are confined to the southeastern United States, except for the purple pitcher (Sarracenia purpurea), which may be found as far north as Canada. Pitcher plants can grow in very poor soil because they can digest insects that fall into their pitchers. They also make excellent houseplants provided the pots are large enough to accommodate the long roots of the mature plants. Know your climate. The purple pitcher is quite hardy and can thrive in very cold weather. The other species need a warm-temperate climate with long, hot summers and mild winters. These pitcher plants can tolerate only a light frost. All pitcher plants grow best in full sun and high humidity. Prepare the soil. Pitcher plants can grow in poor soil consisting mostly of sand with some peat. The primary soil requirement is extremely good drainage. Fertilizer is not crucial. Grow the seedlings in pots.
