First of all, you need to get the pieces appraised. Look in the Yellow Pages or on-line for antique appraisers in your area. Lots of community organizations often sponsor "Antiques Roadshow" -types of events where, for a small fee, your items will be honestly appraised by an expert.

Unfortunately, some unscrupulous dealers exist who will quote you  a dishonest (low) price, then offer to buy the piece from you. That’s a big red flag…the piece is worth far more, and they want it for themselves.

Most valuable, even priceless, antiques are passed up by museums, who are quite particular about what they accept, but you might get lucky. Don’t forget about places like local historical sites or homes. They will sometimes accept period pieces that complement their collections. Don’t expect payment,  but a tax deduction and some other form of gratuity will be offered, such as free admission for a family for a year, etc.

In any case, if your pieces pass the appraisal test, your next stop is the insurance agent: Be sure your items are insured for the proper value.
