Sand is actually a naturally occurring material which is made up of finely divided rock and also mineral particles. It is therefore granular in nature. Sand particles normally have a size between 0.0625 mm to 2 mm. Another property of sand is that it feels gritty when it is rubbed between the fingers. It is divided into five categories, based on how coarse or fine it is. Actually the nature of sand varies with the change in location. It is Bright white in tropical and sub tropical locations because it contains eroded limestone and coral and shell fragments. Whereas it is dark black in obsidian and volcanic basalts because it contains magnetite , chlorite or gypsum etc.
