What is MCT? What are the benefits of MCT?
MCT, which stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides is one of three types of fat. Long Chain Triglycerides (LCT) and Short Chain Triglycerides (SCT) make up the other two types of fat. Sources of MCT include palm kernel oil and coconut oil. MCT is easily digested in the GI tract. Less energy is needed to digest and utilize the MCT, thus making it very useful for patients with conditions such as malabsorption and/or malnutrition. The percentage of MCT in Neocate Infant DHA and ARA (increased from 5% to 33%) means easier absorption and utilization of the formula. As MCT is a fat, it does not affect the hypoallergenicity of the Neocate Infant formula because typically only proteins cause allergic reactions.
