build up across the capacitor?
These are excellent questions that you can find out for yourself by using the Neurons in Action programme. Try this: open up the “Membrane Parameters” panel and then the “Add leak channels” graph. Now go to the “Run Control” panel and expand the “Total # (ms)” selection from 15 to 150. Now go to the “Stimulus Control” panel and increase the “duration, ms (ms)” from 10 to 100 and hit the “Reset and Run” button. You will now see a much longer membrane response curve to the long duration stimulus pulse. Now change the capacitance values on the “Membrane Parameters” panel and see what happens. > 3)Is it true that Vmemb= V(ion channel–resistor) + V(lipid > bilayer–capacitor) I’m not sure what your equations are saying here, Ohm’s law is V=IR so the Vmemb is related to the current passing across the membrane as influenced by both the capacitance and the resistance of the membrane but not in the arithmetic way you have written it. Your text has a detailed derivation of Vmemb on pp. 124-126.
