How Do You Use Helium In Heliox?
Heliox is short for “helium-oxygen” and refers to any gas mixture composed entirely of helium and oxygen. Heliox is primarily used as a breathing gas for medical purposes and deep diving. The following steps will show you how to use helium to make heliox. Step 1 Make heliox for use in medicine with 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent helium. Note how helium simply replaces the nitrogen of regular air in this mixture. Helium is less dense than nitrogen, so heliox is much easier to breathe than regular air. This mixture of heliox may be used during the treatment of many respiratory ailments or when the upper airway is simply obstructed. Step 2 Use heliox if you are a deep commercial diver or you are using a rebreather. Helium is generally too expensive for heliox to be used by recreational divers and regular air is safe to breathe to a depth of 130 feet. If you can afford it, a heliox mix of 19 percent oxygen and 81 percent helium would be a good mixture to use when diving to a maximum dept
