How Do You Use Tyvek?
Tyvek is an air infiltration barrier that is placed between the outside wall framing and the exterior siding. A typical installation is during a remodel or new home construction that requires new siding to be applied. Developed by Dupont, this lightweight paper-like material stops air exchange, but allows moisture to flow through the barrier. The 8-ft to 9-ft wide material comes on long rolls. Most home centers will cut the material to length for you. Since this material is lightweight, it is easy to install on the side of a building using a stepladder and a staple gun. Do to its size, a helper maybe needed to aid in holding the Tyvek before securing it in place. Begin at one end of the home. Overlap the Tyvek 8 to 10 inches from the vertical end of the wall. Use the stepladder to keep the top edge of the roll material level and plumb with the top plate of the home framing. Secure the Tyvek every 12 to 18 inches along the horizontal plate using 1-inch wide staples or plastic washer nai
