For smaller dogs, a good rule of thumb is to have the shortest side be at least two times the length of the mother dog. For larger dogs, one and a half times will do. Keep in mind where the whelping box will be placed, and that the larger the box, the heavier it will be to move. Make the frame using 2″ x 4″s. Place lateral supports made from 2″ x 4″s every 2 feet to support the floor of the box. Cut four sides out of 1/2″ plywood. The sides don’t have to be very tall, in fact, in the beginning, sides that are more than 18″ high can make it difficult to monitor and care for the puppies in their first couple weeks.
