Removing a door molding is easy to do with a few simple tools. Generally, it is necessary to remove the molding before removing the door frame. It is easy to remove the molding without breaking or damaging it, and generally it can be put back in place with no painting or repairs necessary. First, score the edges of the molding. Chances are the molding is being held up mostly by the paint on its edges, not the nails. Score and break the connection between the molding and the wall and the molding and the door frame where it has been painted. Also score any joints of the molding. Next, take the thinnest item you have, either a screwdriver, pry bar, or chisel, and slip it in between the molding and the wall. Run the tool down the molding until you hit a nail. Pry up and loosen the nail. Repeat this for the entire piece of molding.
