Hostas are a gorgeous addition to slightly- to heavily-shaded garden areas. They are hardy perennials, easy to grow, and come in a myriad of shapes, sizes, and colors, from solid green to variegated white, gold, green, and blue. Adult plants require almost no maintenance, although they do prefer soil rich in organic material (like leaves). In the summer, the plants grow spikes with colorful blooms, some of which are fragrant. It is from these spikes that hosta seed pods grow. While it’s relatively easy to divide mature plants, it’s even easier to collect hosta seeds and grow them into new plants. Watch for seed pods to develop on your hosta plants, usually in late summer. Remove seed pods from the plants when they start becoming dry, in about 30 days. If the pods haven’t opened yet and there is the threat of frost, remove the entire spike (pod and all) before they become dry and store in brown paper bags.
