What is a Free Thinker?
A free thinker is one who thinks without a box, meaning there are no limits to what may come to mind and they aren’t afraid of the distance that their mind may take. A free thinker questions everything, and believes nothing until they’ve analyzed it from all angles and is most sound in their mind. They’re open-minded individuals who let their thoughts go as they please, often unable to control or direct where the thoughts lead and allow their thoughts this freedom in order to get all they can out of them and leave open the opportunity for new thoughts that they’ve never thought before arise.
To me, a free thinker is someone who believes what they believe because they have thought about it for themselves, as opposed to having been brought up to believe it or having adopted the belief system of another person or group. In trying to work out whether another person is a free thinker or not, a good rule of thumb is to see if they describe their belief systems as “-ist” or “-ian”. A Marxist takes their views from Karl Marx. A Christian takes their views from Jesus. (In theory, if not in practice!) Either would have a hard time convincing me that they are free thinkers.
