Sewing with knitted material is rewarding because knits don’t need perfect fit. The material drapes and stretches and forgives figure faults. With proper seaming methods, there will be plenty of stretch in the finished garment. You can either knit your own fabric or purchase yardage from a store. You can either purchase a pattern meant to be used with knit fabric or you can take a well-fitted sweater and use it as your guide. In this project, we will measure yardage from an existing sweater, purchase an interlocking knit at the fabric store, do some designing of our own, and whip out a sweater vest in no time at all. Lay out your favorite sweater and trace the body onto dressmaker’s paper. You won’t need the arms. Measure the width of the pattern and double that. Measure the length. This means that if the knit fabric is 45 inches wide and the width of the sweater is less than that, you will need a piece of fabric only as long as the length.
