How does Lioresal / Baclofen work?
As most FAQ on the FDA approved Lioresal will confirm, the effect of baclofen is only a hypothesis. It is believed to work by attaching to certain receptors known as GABA-B that are present in the spinal cord. Through this attachment baclofen moderates the nerve signals passing through the spinal cord to the muscles, thereby leading to relaxation of the muscles. In other words, baclofen treatment can only help relax the muscles, it cannot completely treat muscle spasms or the root causes behind those spasms.
