What is a Karat (kt)?
The karat (kt) is a measure of the purity of gold alloys as commonly used in gold jewelry. Technically, as a measure of purity, one karat is 1/24 purity by mass. What this means is that a karat is the measure of pure gold in a gold alloy based on 24 parts. For example, a 12kt gold stamp means that 12 parts of the alloy out of 24 are pure gold, for a total gold content of 50%. Some common karat weights used in gold jewelry are 9kt, 10kt, 12kt, 14kt, 18kt, 22kt, and 24kt. To determine the percentage of pure gold in your jewelry, simply divide the karat weight stamped on your jewelry by 24. See our Pricing Chart on the Selling Page.
