If you rent or live in a dorm, painting the walls is usually off-limits. You may not even be allowed to use nails or thumbtacks to hang wall decor. Instead, make vinyl wall decals to dress up boring, plain walls. The decals can easily be removed without damaging the wall or paint when you move out or are ready to change your decor. Wall decals also make great holiday decor, such as vinyl snowflakes or other festive designs. Step 1 Purchase contact paper from an office supply or craft store. Contact paper comes in various colors and designs. Sticker-back shelf lining paper can also be used. Step 2 Place a stencil on the back of the contact paper. The backing is paper and has a preprinted grid to help you line up your stencil. Tape the stencil in place. Step 3 Trace the stencil onto the backing with your pencil. Shade in internal cutouts on intricate designs so you know which pieces to cut out. Step 4 Cut out the outer shape with your scissors. Cut out internal designs, such as holes, wi
