How Do You Make Churros?
Spanish churros are a form of pastry dessert that have become a favorite in Spanish-speaking countries the world over. They are often dunked in chocolate sauce and sold at kiosks called churrerĂa stands. Churros make a tasty alternative to ice cream and other desserts, as well as a festive food to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Prepare the Churros Step 1 Place the water, butter, salt and flour in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir over low heat until the mixture congeals into a ball (about 1 minute). Remove the pan from the heat source. Step 2 Beat the eggs in a bowl until they are smooth, then stir them slowly into the mixture. The resulting dough should be fairly thick, but also smooth and pliable. Step 3 Heat the cooking oil in a frying pan or skillet until it is sizzling. Step 4 Spoon the dough mixture into a pastry tube and squeeze it out into lengths of 4 to 5 inches apiece. Step 5 Place each strip of dough on the skillet (3 or 4 at a time). Serves 2-3 for breakfast. You ll need a large heavy-bottomed frying pan, a medium sauce pan, a mixing bowl, a fork, a large spoon and tongs. You ll also need one special piece of equipment to prepare the churros a large cookie press (“churrera”) or a pastry bag. If you are using a cookie press, it probably came with an assortment of discs and nozzles. Choose a disc with a large star-shaped opening, as shown in the photo.
