What does monogenic determinism mean?

0

I don’t think there’s a fixed definition for this… it may make more sense if you put it in context. However, genetic determinism is a theory that suggests all our characteristics are caused by our genes. For example, if someone is prone to depression – they have genes that make them that way. Monogenetic determinism can mean that there is one specific gene which is thought to produce a characteristic. This theory has come under fire a bit, mainly because people think it means that everything we do down to our personality quirks is controlled by our genes (we know there are other factors such as the surrounding environment, and that sometimes many genes and other molecules work together to produce an effect). On the other hand, there are diseases which are the result of one faulty gene and in this case, when talking about disease, monogenetic determinism is a valid theory.
