What Was Democracy in America?

The Heyman Center has planned a series of events on ‘What Was Democracy?’ with a view to studying the evolution of democratic ideas and culture. Josiah Ober gave a fine talk on Athenian democracy last year. This year, Joyce Appleby, Professor Emerita of History at UCLA and the grand figure of American history, and Columbias own Eric Foner, one of the foremost contemporary historians of this country, will speak on the evolution of democracy in America. This event is free and open to the public. No tickets, no registration necessary. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.
