Tile grout should be replaced if it’s starting to crack or crumble. Small cracks can turn into larger cracks. Water can start to seep in and damage the base underneath the tile. Sooner or later the tiles will start coming loose. Replacing the grout will save you time and money in the future, by preventing more extensive damage. Step 1 Use masking tape or blue painter’s tape to cover the tile around the grout you are going to remove to avoid scratching the tile. Step 2 Dig out grout you want to replace with a screwdriver or a grout saw. A grout saw can be purchased at any hardware store and is designed just for this job. Dig down to solid grout and scratch it a bit so the new grout has something to grab onto. Step 3 Vacuum away any dust or chunks of grout. Step 4 Remove the masking tape or blue painter’s tape.
