Cornice boards give dimension to a window, and they can be used with or without curtains or blinds. They can either be covered in paint, stain, fabric or wallpaper and can even be created out of wood scraps. You do not need to be an expert carpenter to accomplish this project. With only a few hours and a handful of tools, any do-it-yourself novice can complete this project. These cornice board instructions are based on creating a simple rectangle outline to fit a window that is less than 8 feet wide. Step 1 Take measurements. With a tape measure, measure the width, height and depth of the window from the outside casing to the outside casing. Add a half inch to both sides to accommodate the thickness of the wood as well as some extra space. Step 2 Layout pattern. Using a carpenter’s square and a straight edge, draw a rectangle on the wood, according to the window measurements.
