What Are Concordances?
Very simply, concordances are huge, alphabetical lists of all the words to be found in a particular translation of the Bible. The most basic use of a concordance is to find all of the verses that contain a particular word. However, concordances often provide several other helpful features. Many concordances will have Hebrew and Greek glossaries in the back that give transliterations (phoenetic English spellings of Hebrew and Greek words), brief definitions of a particular term, and how it is translated in other verses. One of the most valuable features a concordance can offer is a numbering system (which always comes with corresponding Hebrew and Greek glossaries). There are currently two main numbering systems used: Strong’s and G/K. In the graphic below, you’ll see a number in the far right column of the entry for “ablaze.” These numbers can be looked up in the Hebrew and Greek glossaries.
