Does Firefox not block pop-ups?
Sneaky web pages try many different ways to get pop-ups past the pop-up blocker. Javascript, which is necessary to run fancy Web 2.0 pages like GMail (and parts of Askville) can be used to pop things up. Click the “insert/edit link” button in an answer and you’ll get a pop up, but it’s one you want. There are also those “layer pop-ups”, which don’t open a window but do put a layer on top of the stuff you want to read. Again, that’s Javascript at work. You can disable more popups with the NoScript add-on. That blocks nearly all Javascript. You then have to re-enable it for the web sites (like Askville) for which you do want pop-ups (and other Javascript features).
