How are rotator cuff tears treated?
The goals of treatment for torn rotator cuffs are relief of pain and restoration of function. Small tears frequently respond to non-surgical treatment, which may include anti-inflammatory medication, injections, rest, and physical therapy. Larger tears are sometimes treated similarly, but more frequently require surgery. Fortunately, surgery can be carried out arthroscopically, using minimally invasive techniques in most cases. This results in less pain and quicker recovery in the immediate post-operative period. Physical therapy and a home exercise program are important parts of the recovery program post-operatively, and may be needed for at least several months.
