What Causes Fog?
The number one reason we have fog is because of radiation fog. On cold, clear nights, what happens is the Earth radiates heat to space, the Earth’s surface cools down, that cools the atmosphere, and as it cools down, the atmosphere becomes saturated and you get fog. So, we get this shallow layer of clouds near the surface. And that’s the kind of fog we often get. If it’s really dense fog, that’s often a very good sign that the situation will clear up later in the day. Sometimes, when you’re moving up the mountain slope, you have clouds forming on the mountains, and in that case, it’s fog. Is Seattle weather predictable?
