Why Jack Black?
A nod and a wink to High Fidelity. JB played Barry, possibly the most sincere music snob ever. His too cool for school strut to even a song like “Walking on Sunshine” epitomizes what a good mix can do; his conversion from lead singer of Sonic Death Monkey to “Barry Jive,” of Barry Jive and The Uptown Five, shows that a genre-spanning musical taste is a healthy thing. (You might argue that Cusack’s Rob was the lead of the film. That he went through the same changes (and more, and on deeper levels) as our Barry. But, c’mon…don’t kid yourself.) Do I have to like Jack Black? No, but what are you, dead inside? He’s rocktacular and hysterimous. High Fidelity? School of Rock? That amazing Jesus Christ Superstar parody on Mr Show?
