Do birth parents receive counseling?
At FAC, we are strong advocates for counseling and education about adoption-related issues for both birth parents and prospective adoptive parents. Each birth parent deals with their thoughts and feelings differently. Some develop good relationships with their caseworkers and openly discuss their thoughts and feelings. Others are more reserved and are reluctant to talk in order to deny what they are feeling. We offer each birth parent the benefit of our knowledge and insights regarding adoption issues; some will make more use of what we offer than others do. At the conclusion of the adoption process, each client is assured that FAC remains available should they need further assistance or support. If in-depth therapy regarding life issues is indicated at any time, we will refer a birth parent to an appropriate professional resource. According to law, birth parents must be given the opportunity for counseling. They may waive this right in writing.
