The collection of manuscripts and fragments was found by a shepherd in 1947 at the site of an ancient Qumran settlement. The major texts are a set of rules for a community of monks: The Manual of Discipline, A Zadokite Document: a copy of which was already found in Cairo, and a Formula of Blessings; two sets of hymns; commentaries on the Books of Micah, Nahum and Habakkuk: a lengthy discourse on Moses; the epic tale The War of the Sons of Light an the sons of Darkness; and a guide for the Messianic Banquet, a future congregation of Israel. Researchers believe that the scrolls were written between 170 B.C. an 68 A.D.
