What happened when TPS was over?

At the end of the Program, President George H.W. Bush wanted to extend temporary protection at the government of El Salvador’s request, but a legal technical problem arose because TPS could not be extended for more than 18 months. As a solution to this, the U.S. government decided to create a “sui generis” program through executive command. The Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), allowed Salvadorans to renew their Employment Authorization Document (EAD), for one more year which was extended for an additional period that expired on December 31, 1994. A new extension authorized the permit until May 1996. Currently, TPS has been extended until March 9, 2009.
