Can HPAI infect humans?
Yes, HPAI H5N1 has acquired the capability to infect humans. The World Health Organization reports that there are 381 confirmed cases in humans, with 242 fatal cases, predominantly in southeast Asia. Human infections have been linked to exposure to infected commercial poultry, but to date, there has never been a documented case of direct transmission of AIV from a wild bird to a human. Currently, the virus does not spread from human to human.
