WHY slow jams?
The songs have meaning, tell a story and are easy to sing along with. Q: Do you think the use of today’s computer generated playlists have hurt slow jams from the days of hands-on DJs like Melvin Lindsey? Absolutely. The DJ has been eliminated from the process and when you don’t have control, it’s somebody else’s baby. You love the baby maybe, but not as much as if it were your baby. That special connection between DJ and listener has been lost . Q: How do you think the slow jams of today compare to the slow jams of the 90s? The 80s? The 70s? My personal opinion is that the electronic approach to music has eliminated the lifeblood of music that existed in the 70’s and early 80’s. Real instrumentation is so important to the ingredient of a song. Writing has changed and today is more what I call zipper music (sexual content).
