what is progressive discipline?
Progressive discipline is a series of steps or “progress” for enforcing policies in the workplace. For example: a worker shows up on the job, is over 3 hours late and has no reasonable excuse. The first violation draws extra training to ensure the worker understands the company’s tardiness policy. The second violation is a verbal warning. Third and fourth violations draw a written warning. The fifth violations results in 3 days unpaid suspension, and the sixth violation means the worker is let go. Progressive discipline is any process on the job which lists distinct steps for continued violation of a company rule or policy. Each business is free to set its own policies for workplace discipline, but must apply those policies fairly and equally. In the ideal situation, the employee knows and understands the steps in its company’s progressive discipline ahead of time.
