Can Apert Syndrome be treated?
Unfortunately, as Apert Syndrome is genetic, there is no known cure, but there is much that can be done to prevent or treat complications; allowing a child to grow as normally as possible. Dr. Colyer can perform certain surgeries in order to reposition the facial bones from mid-eye to upper jaw, or even spacing the bones in just such a way that new bone growth is encouraged over time. Sometimes a fusion of the fingers and/or toes can occur with Apert Syndrome. However surgery is only necessary when function is impaired, and in the case of toes, if the ability to walk might be at stake.
