UMDs as gaming media UMDs provide great storage capacity for PSP gaming, allowing developers to utilize its space for larger game resources (textures, models, FMVs, music, etc.). One criticism of UMDs as a game storage medium is the load times that often plague most optical disc-utilizing platforms. Some games often load quickly (WipEout Pure, for example) but others become quite troublesome (WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2006, for example). Disc streaming, often used on consoles to shorten load times, is discouraged to a degree due to the reliance of a constantly-working UMD drive, which has a tremendous impact on the already short battery life of the system. Newer games, like Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Daxter, utilize disc streaming more effectively than previous PSP software.
