What is a Subordinating Clause?

0

The definition of a subordinating clause is a clause which “cannot stand on its own as a full sentence.” But you probably learned that in 6th grade English class. Annotation-wise, never, ever annotate using the clausal break as you would separate in an ordinary sentence. Your job as an annotator, should you choose to accept it (and you did), is to break the discourse down into its smallest possible units, Statement Breaks. Clausal breaks, are useful for annotators to help us filter out subordinating clauses, subordinating verbs, refinements, generalizations, and quoted speech. This filtering of information is particularly useful when viewing the rendered text because it separates the sentence into different, more easily viewable sections.
