What is a Sequoyah Book?
Each year the Oklahoma Library Association selects books to put on the Childrens Sequoyah Masterlist. The books are selected based on the following criteria: U.S. author, published in the last three years, originality, literary quality, interest, and appeal. The winning author is selected by the children of Oklahoma. Each child who reads or listens to at least three books on the Sequoyah list is eligible to vote for their favorite in April. Votes from all of the schools are tallied and the winner is announced in April. What is Indian Springs doing to promote Sequoyah Books? Every time a student reads a book and can answer a question about it they receive a ticket. They place the ticket in the piggy bank for that book. We hold a voting party in April and the students whose tickets are drawn from each bank receive a gift bag filled with books and other items. We also play a Sequoyah Championship game at this time.
