What is a basement suite?
Basement suites are self contained units, located in the basement of a single family or semi-detached dwelling. “Self contained” means that they are separated from the upstairs dwelling unit by means of a separate or shared entrance to the outside and that they contain kitchen, sanitary and sleeping facilities. The Municipal Land Use Bylaw (99/059) considers basement suites “Discretionary Use – Planning Commission” in certain districts. That means that if a permit is approved, it must be advertised and adjacent property owners are individually notified by mail. Anyone wishing to appeal has 14 days from the date the permit is issued to appeal pursuant to the Municipal Government Act.
