How long do hair extensions last?

The longevity of hair extensions is based on the care provided by the individual. Usually, hair extensions last 3-6 months, although we have customers that have worn their same hair extensions for over a year! Also, some customers have their extensions taken out temporarily and re-applied as human hair is much more durable than synthetic. A regular visit to your stylist is not a bad idea to extend the life of your hair extensions.

How long do you want them to last? The method you choose can determine this. Some extensions are only meant for a day with a specific hair do for a special occasion. Some methods are meant for a month or 6 weeks or one week. A strand by strand method or fusion method can last last three months or so. Some methods claim they can last 4 to 6 months. Sure, the bond may be glued into the hair that long, but I do not recommend much longer than 3 months because the hair grows and no matter how nice the method, once the bond is hanging that far down on the hair strand from the time growing, it tends to cause undue stress on the hair which may lead to breakage or have a high potential to tangle or dread. Tangles and dreads may also lead to breakage. The care you put into them will greatly effect the wear that you get out of them.

Whatever method you chose, you should make sure to buy high quality hair. Even if you glue them in, good hair can be reused multiple times.

Video Transcript How Long Do Hair Extensions Last? Hi, my name is Julia and this is my model Kim from Extensions by Julia on behalf of Expert Village. Today we are going to be talking about hair extensions. (How long can I keep my hair in?) Well that depends on each individual. First of all you want to make sure that you are taking good care of your hair once you leave the salon. If you are very rough when washing your hair, if you are rough when you are using a comb or a brush or even using flat irons and curling irons, that can cause a lot more damage causing them to fall out sooner. You should be able to get it 3 to 6 months wear out of your extensions. Now because every person has a different growth hair rate, that will depend on you. If somebody in 3 months grows 3 inches out of their hair, you have the extension hanging down here; one, it doesn’t look very attractive and two, it is creating a lot more weight on your natural hair causing a lot more breakage. The length of time the extensions can stay in place before they will need to be removed and reapplied depends on how fast you hair grows and the rate of your natural hair fall. The bonds will grow away from your head as your hair grows out. When this occurs, the weight of the strand will shift further down your hair shaft. Furthermore, it’s common that people will shed up to 100 hairs per day. Your natural hair will shed at it’s usual rate, but the fallen hairs will remain in the bond. Before too long, the weight of the strand is only being supported by half as many hairs as it was in the beginning and will create tension on your natural hair like a tightrope. Most people can go up to 3 months before this happens. On average, the human hair extensions will need to be removed and reapplied every 8 to 16 weeks.
