Mandarin has four tones, corresponding to three ancient tone categories: Ping, Shang, and Qu. All Ru tones have merged with the other tones. Only the first category, Ping, has a split in Yin and Yang (Mandarin 1st and 2nd tones) thus yielding four tones.
