What is a Stamp Collector?
A stamp collector is often times referred to as a philatelist. The term philatelist is from the word “Philately”, which means the study of revenue and postage stamps. It is derived from the Greek words “philos” for friend and “ateleia” for exemption from charges or payment; as postage stamps indicate prepayment of postage. Although a stamp collector and a philatelist are usually equated, a philatelist basically reads and studies about stamps, but does not necessarily mean that he collects stamps. We can simply say that a philatelist pays more attention to detail. On the contrary, stamp collectors or stamp hobbyist may want to acquire the stamps solely for pleasure without regard for its usage and origin. A postage stamp collector finds the stamps to be a very fascinating hobby. It’s a rather universal hobby, for the reason that stamp collecting can be applied to anyone; male or female, young or old. It is an enjoyable way to spend your free time and you don’t have to spend much.
