What is SHA-1?
SHA-1 is the current hash function of choice as implemented in both the PGP and S/MIME standards. SHA-1 is formally defined in [FIPS180-1], [ANSI930-2] & [ISOIEC10118-3]. SHA-1 is based upon the MD4 algorithm, but was enhanced by NIST / NSA. The output of SHA-1 is 160-bits. SHA-1 has been extensively analysed but to date there have been no successful attacks.
