What is IEEE 802.1P Tagging QoS?
The IEEE 802.1P signaling technique is an IEEE specification for prioritizing network traffic at the data-link/MAC sublayer (OSI Reference Model Layer 2). 802.1P is an extension of the 802.1Q (VLANs tagging) standard. It establishes eight levels of priority and network adapters and switches route traffic based on the priority level. And the 802.1P header includes a three-bit field for prioritization, which allows packets to be grouped into various traffic classes. Figure below is the format of 802.1Q Tagged frame for Ethernet. The 802.1Q VLAN tagging is a 4-byte long data immediately following the MAC source address and contains VLAN protocol ID and tag control information composed of user priority, Canonical Format Indicator (CFI) and optional VLAN identifier (VID). VLAN Protocol ID: defined value of 8100 in hex. When a frame has the EtherType equal to 8100, this frame carries the tag IEEE 802.1Q / 802.1P. 8100 is reserved for VLAN-tagged frame. User Priority: Defines user priority, g
